I will give special mention to Digimon World Next Order on PS4 for returning to form and being a great follow-up years later. Its a bit rough around the edges, but is oh so fun. Your monster will die and be reborn several times, so you will have lots of opportunity to experiment and learn. Raise your monster, explore the digital world, save the day. Runner up for me is Digimon World, also on Playstation 1. The MR games after 2 were not so good, I heard. Monster Rancher 1 is good too, but the sequel improved on it in every way. You can also combine monsters you've raised for unique combinations. The art style, music, and sound effects are iconic in my opinion. True monster raising, you grow as a trainer, increase your rank through tournaments and special events, unlock new monsters, etc. My absolute favourite is Monster Rancher 2 on PS1. It's not made any better by the stupidest silent protagonist that everyone just shits on throughout the entire game for no reason half the time. It all ends up being somewhat fun for 10 hours or so and the most tedious thing ever after a while.) You will also have 2 AI team mates, on boss fights whenever they don't use the right move you actively get screwed and they don't use the right move ever which causes enemies to get attacks that can just one shot you. On top of that you need to learn and remember what type of weapon each monster is weak to or you will be spending an extra 3-5 turns / fight. It requires a bit of grinding and is incredibly tedious in it's combat(The whole combat is based around a rock paper scissors mechanic and you need to figure out and remember which monsters play which attack for every single fight no matter how over leveled you are. I am most of the way through the game now.
